Viking Welding & Fabrication: The Calabasas Owner’s Guide

We stock, weld, and install Viking-compatible gate hardware across Calabasas, and most broken welds or cracked brackets on a Viking gate run between $185 and $425 installed. If your gate sags, drags, or the weld at the hinge has popped, you’ll usually know quickly: the gate will start scraping the driveway on one side or won’t close square against the post. We keep raw steel stock, hinge blanks, and welding rigs on our trucks, so most Calabasas callouts are finished in one visit.

What we see most often with Viking gates in the Calabasas area is weld fatigue at the bottom hinge bracket. It’s not glamorous, but it’s the truth. The weight of the gate plus years of dry Santa Ana heat cycles flex the steel just enough that a factory weld eventually gives out. Victor Salinas grew up in the Las Virgenes corridor and has been repairing gates like this for over four decades, and he’ll tell you the metal usually fails before the motor does.

Which Viking Models This Applies To

Viking residential and light-commercial gates share a lot of structural DNA across their slide and swing lines: the G-5, F-1, and L-3 series all use similar hinge post brackets, frame channel, and wheel carriage mounts. That’s good news for Calabasas homeowners, because it means the welding and fabrication work we do translates across models. The bad news is that Viking changed their bracket geometry twice in the last fifteen years, so a hinge plate from a 2008 G-5 will not line up on a 2018 G-5 without modification.

If you have the original manual, the model plate is usually on the bottom rail of the gate frame near the drive side. No manual? Measure the hinge plate bolt spacing. Pre-2012 Viking brackets almost always run 3-1/2 inches center-to-center. Newer models run 4 inches. That single measurement tells us whether we can weld in a direct-fit replacement or need to fabricate an adapter plate. For most Viking work, we prefer to weld a properly sized steel plate to the factory spec rather than bolt on universal hardware from a big-box store. Universal brackets are a compromise, and on a heavy gate, a compromise is just a future service call.

Signs Your Viking Welding & Fabrication Is Failing

  • The gate drags on the driveway at the latch side. The top hinge weld has stretched or cracked, letting the gate lean forward. The motor is still working, but it’s fighting gravity and losing.
  • You hear a sharp pop or ping when opening or closing. A weld has fractured and the bracket is shifting under load. This is the sound of metal separating from metal, and it won’t fix itself.
  • The gate bounces or shudders when it stops. The lower carriage mount or wheel bracket has play from a failing weld, and the weight is hammering the steel every cycle.
  • The gate won’t close squarely against the stop post. The frame itself has a cracked weld at a corner joint, allowing the whole gate to twist slightly. You can sometimes see a hairline crack in the paint first.
  • Visible rust staining running from a joint or plate. In Calabasas, we don’t deal with heavy rain, but morning marine-layer moisture and irrigation overspray will find any exposed steel at a weld and start working on it. Rust weep at a weld is a sign the joint has already begun to fail underneath.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

In Calabasas, most Viking welding and fabrication repairs fall within these ranges, installed:

  • Single hinge bracket re-weld or replacement: $185-$285
  • Cracked frame joint repair at a corner: $220-$340
  • Bottom wheel carriage mount or plate fabrication: $260-$425
  • Full hinge set replacement, both posts, with fabricated plates: $380-$600

The range comes down to steel thickness, how much of the old bracket needs grinding out, and whether the gate has to be lifted off its pins to get a clean weld. We quote the price before we strike an arc, and that’s the price you pay. Every weld is ground smooth, primed, and painted to match the gate color we can see. And every job, no matter how small, carries our written 90-Day Done Right Promise. If that weld moves or cracks within 90 days, we come back with a grinder and a rig and make it right, no phone tag, no argument.

DIY or Call Us?

Here’s the honest answer: if your Viking gate has a cracked weld or a broken bracket, a homeowner can safely check the bolt spacing, look for the model plate, and take photos of the damage. That helps us. But welding a structural hinge on a 400-pound gate is not a weekend project. A gate under tension can shift without warning, and a weld that looks solid to an amateur eye can fail catastrophically weeks later, taking the gate, the motor, and possibly a car with it. There’s also a real risk of setting the gate post or nearby brush on fire during a grinder or arc job. We carry fire blankets and do this work with the gate properly supported and braced. This is one repair where the cost of getting it wrong is far higher than the cost of calling a professional.

If the gate is giving you trouble, there is a reason - we just have to find it.
