BFT Welding & Fabrication: The Calabasas Owner’s Guide

We stock and install BFT-compatible welding and fabrication parts for Calabasas homeowners every week, with most gate brackets, hinge plates, and motor mounting repairs completed same-day. Installed pricing for BFT-specific welding and fabrication work in Calabasas typically runs $240 to $680 depending on the part and how much structural repair the post or frame needs. If your BFT gate sags, binds mid-travel, or the operator strains against a hinge that has shifted, the failure is usually in the metal, not the motor, and our truck carries what it takes to fix it on the first visit.

Which BFT Models This Applies To

BFT has used a few different hinge and bracket patterns across its lineup, and matching the fabrication to the model is where most handymen lose time. The Deimos and Phobos swing-arm operators share a common hinge-plate layout, but the Rigel and older Athena series use a narrower post bracket with different bolt spacing. The short version: if the operator model is on the control board label, we can cross it against the hinge before we cut or weld anything.

On the OEM-versus-aftermarket decision, we carry BFT OEM hinge kits and fabricated replacements cut from the same 10-gauge steel BFT used in the original brackets. Aftermarket equivalents from brands like LiftMaster, Mighty Mule, and Ghost Controls do not cross-fit BFT posts cleanly, and we have seen too many Calabasas gates with ovalized bolt holes from a bracket that was close enough to bolt on but not close enough to hold. If your post has been welded before or shows layered repair plates, we match the existing footprint rather than assuming the original geometry.

Signs Your BFT Welding & Fabrication Is Failing

  • The gate sags at the latch side. The hinge post or gate frame has moved, usually because a weld has cracked through or a bolt hole has wallowed out. The motor still pushes, but the gate is dragging on the ground or missing the latch plate.
  • You hear a pop or creak at the hinge side. A broken weld on the hinge plate makes a sharp pop when the gate cycles. A slow creak that worsens over weeks is more often the hinge pin itself wearing inside a binding bracket.
  • The gate hesitates or reverses mid-cycle. The BFT board reads the extra amp draw from a binding hinge and backs off. The motor is not failing - it is protecting itself from a metal problem it cannot fix.
  • The operator bracket moves when the gate is 20% open. If the motor mount flexes or shifts as the lever arm loads, the bracket bolts are loosening or the bracket itself is bending. This is the failure that kills BFT gearboxes fastest.
  • You can feel play when you push the gate by hand. A properly hung BFT gate moves stiffly but steadily. Loose rotation at the hinge plate, with the motor disengaged, means the post-to-hinge connection has failed enough that the opener is now doing the holding on its own.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

In Calabasas, a single BFT hinge plate replacement with welding typically lands between $240 and $420. A full hinge post rebuild, where the post is cut back, sleeved, and re-welded, runs $420 to $680. The spread depends on how much of the old weld has to be ground out, whether the post is filled with concrete, and whether the gate frame itself has cracked and needs plating. Every price is quoted and agreed before any work starts - no surprises on the bill, ever.

What is included: the part, the welding, the grinding and cleanup, re-hanging the gate, and re-syncing the BFT limits so the motor is not fighting a fresh alignment. The work is covered by our written 90-Day Done Right Promise. If it is not right, we come back and make it right.

DIY or Call Us?

You can safely check the hinge bolts and the bracket-to-post connection with the gate in manual mode. Look for rust staining around the welds, gaps between the plate and post, and shiny metal where a crack has started. What you should not do is grind out or re-weld a load-bearing hinge while the gate is still hung - those springs, hinges, and operator arms hold enough tension to cause serious injury if they let go. The same goes for high-tension BFT spring packs; those are set and released with the gate supported and pinned, not by hand pressure.

If you have found the crack, you have found the problem. What you need from there is a welder who knows BFT geometry. Call (747) 308-3262 and we will tell you honestly over the phone whether it is a simple repair or a post rebuild before we ever set foot on the driveway.
